New Home for Ike’s Place: The Lower Haight?

A grassroots Facebook campaign sprang up yesterday urging insanely-popular San Francisco sandwich shop Ike’s Place to move to the Lower Haight.

An anonymous tipster alerted us to the Facebook page, which reads:

We hear Ike’s Place might be looking for a new home. We think Ike’s would make a great addition to the Lower Haight! If you like Ike like we do, LIKE this page and spread the word!

In case you’ve somehow managed to avoid the Ike’s-related news bonanza the past few months, here’s the situation.

  • Ike’s Place, currently located on 16th Street at Sanchez, is very popular.
  • This popularity causes lines.
  • These lines upset a few neighbors, and in May, Ike’s was served with an eviction notice.
  • Ike’s was supposed to close August 24th, but at the last minute Ike’s attorney discovered a pretty awesome error — the landlord had sued Ike and his mother (the people) instead of Ike’s Place (the entity), and thus the eviction was stayed.
  • In short, Ike’s is still in business — at least for now.

So would the Lower Haight be a good home for Ike’s?

Uhh, yeah.

For one thing, we’ve got just a few potential storefronts — including this one, or, possibly, this one. A new eatery in the neighborhood would be great news, after the recent back-to-back closures of RNM and Burger Joint. And best of all, we’re OK with some street noise. Heck, folks who live and work on Haight Street would probably welcome a little extra foot traffic.

So, if you’re a Lower Haight resident and think Ike’s would be good for the ‘hood (and vice versa), head on over to the Facebook page and Like the heck out of it. Who knows if Ike will ever see it, but it’s worth a shot, right? After all, it worked for Betty White
