Roland’s Bakery Officially Closed, Moving to Hayes Valley

posted by Andrew Dudley on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 8:10 am

An update on our recent post about the sudden closure of Roland’s Bakery on Haight Street:

We’ve now received official word that the shop is indeed closed for good. Due to a dispute with the landlord, the much-loved bakery will not be returning to its location in the Lower Haight. Instead, it will migrate to a bigger space in Hayes Valley — specifically, the corner of Hayes and Gough previously occupied by Essencia, where it will reportedly rise from its delicious ashes in a new incarnation as “Terra Bakery and Cafe.”

Co-owner Jenn Westmoreland explains to us via email that the new Rolan– err, Terra, will “be opening around the middle of April” and “is going to feature all of Roland’s original baked goods and bagels, with a[n] updated and improved menu.” And, in a big development, Terra “will also now be serving dinner as well as beer and wine.”

While we’re admittedly intrigued by the idea of an extended menu, more than anything we’re just excited to have our sweet, buttery Roland’s back. We’ll consider the extra hike to/from Hayes Valley an unexpected opportunity to burn off the carbs.

What Happened to Roland’s?

posted by Andrew Dudley on Friday, March 19, 2010 at 6:54 am

Just a few months ago, we were celebrating the arrival of Roland’s Bakery in the Lower Haight. The muffins, pastries, bagels, and bialies were like nothing else in the neighborhood.

Then, in February, Roland’s abruptly shuttered its doors.

What happened?

Some online chatter suggests a dispute between the owner and the landlord. Some say they’re opening a second location in Hayes Valley. Calls to the shop lead to an automated dead end. Emails go unreturned.

So what’s the deal? Are they expanding or contracting? Will they ever re-open? If anyone can solve this mystery, we’d like to know. Because we’re going through extreme asiago bagel withdrawal right now.
